Travel to Japan from the UK: When to Go, What to See and How to Plan Your Trip

Japan has become one of the most sought-after long-haul destinations for travellers

from the UK and it’s easy to see why. Nowhere else blends ancient traditions, futuristic cities and breath-taking landscapes quite like Japan.

From peaceful temples and traditional gardens to neon-lit city streets and world-class cuisine, Japan offers a travel experience that feels completely unique. Whether you are planning your first trip to Japan or returning to explore more of the country, it is a destination that never disappoints.

What to See and Do in Japan

Japan offers an incredible variety of experiences, making it perfect for couples, families and adventurous travellers.

Explore historic Kyoto - Visit centuries-old temples, wander through bamboo forests and see the famous red torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Experience vibrant Tokyo - Tokyo is one of the world’s most exciting cities, with incredible food, cutting-edge technology, fascinating neighbourhoods and famous landmarks like Shibuya Crossing.

See iconic Mount Fuji - Japan’s most recognisable natural landmark offers spectacular views and photo opportunities.

Relax in traditional hot springs - Bathing in a Japanese onsen (hot spring) surrounded by mountains is one of the country’s most memorable experiences.

Visit historic Hiroshima - A moving and important stop for many travellers, combining powerful history with a vibrant modern city.

Getting Around Japan

Travelling around Japan is surprisingly easy. The country has one of the most efficient transport systems in the world.

The famous Shinkansen (bullet train) connects major cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka at speeds of up to 320 km/h. It is fast, comfortable and incredibly punctual.

Within cities, extensive metro and train networks make it simple to explore, even for first-time visitors.

Many travellers also purchase a Japan Rail Pass, which allows unlimited travel on much of the national rail network and can be excellent value when visiting multiple cities.

Best Time to Visit Japan

Japan is a year-round destination, with each season offering something different.

Spring (March–May) - Cherry blossom season is world famous and truly spectacular. Parks and temples fill with pink blooms, creating beautiful scenes across the country. However, it is also one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit, so planning well in advance is essential.

Autumn (September–November) - Often considered the best time to travel to Japan. Temperatures are pleasant and the autumn foliage turns the landscapes into stunning shades of red and gold.

Summer (June–August) - Summer brings vibrant festivals and lively street celebrations, although temperatures can be hot and humid.

Winter (December–February) - Perfect for snow lovers, with excellent skiing and the unique experience of relaxing in hot springs surrounded by snow.

Flights to Japan from the UK

Direct flights from the UK to Japan typically take around 13–14 hours.

Most travellers fly from London Heathrow to Tokyo, with airlines such as British Airways and Japan Airlines operating direct routes. Flights arrive into either Haneda Airport, which is closest to central Tokyo, or Narita International Airport just outside the city.

Connecting flights are also available via major hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Helsinki.

Independent Travel or Japan Tours

Japan is one of the safest and easiest countries in Asia to explore independently. Its transport system is efficient, signage is increasingly English-friendly, and the country is incredibly welcoming to visitors, though English is not widely spoken outside Tokyo.

However, many travellers also choose escorted or small-group tours of Japan. These tours provide expert guides, carefully planned itineraries and a stress-free way to see multiple regions in one trip.

Both options work extremely well — the best choice simply depends on how you prefer to travel.
